Since the advent of harmonica instruments around 170 years ago, manufacturers have strived to bring their instruments to a high level of technical development. Every instrument is subject to natural wear and tear after extended use. Aging of materials and other defects also impair playability. This requires skilled professionals equipped with the expertise and craftsmanship to maintain and repair these usually high-quality instruments. It is evident that almost every repairer has developed and uses a variety of working techniques. The same applies to special tools and aids. This is not surprising, given that there is currently no comprehensive, technical description of the repair of harmonica instruments. It is the author's aim to close this gap with the specialist books "Harmonica Instruments: Parts 1–4."
This Part 2 describes the technical structure and function of the individual components and illustrates them with numerous illustrations. Tuning instruments is a very difficult and time-consuming task. All tuning tools, aids, and techniques are covered in great detail. 22 suspended tone tables offer a rich selection of different suspended tone tunings, from the flat suspended tone tuning to the extremely sharp musette tuning. The tables reflect the original tunings of more than 30 named instruments.
The presentation of instrument technology and the various repair procedures is brand-neutral; the basic construction of the instruments is virtually identical across manufacturers. Differences are addressed where necessary. All repair measures aim to ensure the long-term functionality of the instrument. Even for specific problems such as "changing the register disposition" and "minimizing key noise," proven modification methods are described.
Technical structure and functionality of the components, repairs to cases, covers, keyboards, tone keys, bass mechanisms, registers, bellows, soundposts and reed plates, tuning of the instruments, fingering diagrams, and suspended tone tables. 262 pages, 241 illustrations, 22 suspended tone tables, DIN A4 format, paperback, 1st edition 1999, ISBN 3-00-005010-8
